Vision Services

Community Services and Programs

Our Community Services division offers life-changing services, programs and training to community members with visual impairments.

Assistive Technology (AT)...

Assistive technology is a gateway to personal and professional independence for those who are visually impaired, blind, or deaf-blind. Our AT program provides a variety of services, such as assessments, training, and AT/IT integration assistance to employers. Assistive devices paired with instruction and training from our staff allow clients to chart a path to independence.

A growing segment of assistance for students is available through smartphones and tablets, offering such aids as note taking, verbal dictation with punctuation, talking scientific calculators and audible textbooks.

Retail Store...

Our sensory aids store, located inside the Low Vision Rehabilitation Center, offers a wide range of items to assist with daily living. Specialty glasses, handheld magnifiers, electronic video magnifiers, talking watches and kitchen aids are among the equipment geared to enable clients to maintain independence. These aids also include wearable devices that read text, recognize faces, identify products, and much more. Clients can now shop our online store at lablind.com.

Workforce Development...

Securing a job is a foundation for independence. Our Workforce Development team helps those with visual impairments and other disabilities evaluate their employment options, develop workplace skills, create a resume, build interview confidence, and pair clients with potential employers.

Older Blind...

Our Older Blind program serves those 55 and over with low vision evaluations, along with recommendations for low vision devices. Our team provides instruction and training to ensure the client understands how best to utilize the technology.

Children’s and Early Intervention Programs...

We have provided training through our Children’s Program since 2005, offering services for infants through 3-year-olds, plus children and adolescents. We now offer an Early Intervention program, providing services for infants to 3-year-olds, plus their families. Our Children’s and Early Intervention Programs provides specialized services and training in developing basic motor, mobility, sensory and social skills necessary to learning. We help children and adolescents with vision impairment maximize their opportunities for achieving their personal, educational, and/or professional goals.

Independent Living Skills (ILS)...

Our ILS program includes adaptive skills and techniques to increase independence. Clients receive hands-on experience in our on-site training environments, and address ways to cook safely, and learn skills related to financial, home, and medication management. Clients also participate in community outings relative to independent living. The ILS program makes it possible for those who are visually impaired to build self-reliance and independence.

Low Vision Rehabilitation Center...

Our Low Vision Rehabilitation Center offers evaluations for clients in the Ark-La-Tex referred to us by their eye care professional. Testing includes low vision assessments, visual field testing and evaluations for work placement. Disability testing for exiting members of the military as well as occupational therapy related to low vision are offered to our clients. Our clinicians and therapists craft personalized plans to help each client achieve their best life.
